Review of The Lemonheads

The Basics: The Lemonheads, 'The Lemonheads,' Vagrant Records, $18
Fave Raves: More than 10 years after his last CD with the ever-changing Lemonheads, Evan Dando is back with a new crew and an old, back-to-basics sound. Bolstered by the scorching rhythm section of Descendents' drummer Bill Stevenson and bassist Karl Alvarez, Dando turns out nearly a dozen butt-kicking riff-rockers.
Just Noise: There's nothing as lyrically sublime as "My Drug Buddy" or "Confetti" among the latest crunchers.
If You Like...: Bubble-gum grunge, this will be right up your alley.
Outstanding: Dinosaur Jr.'s J. Mascis contributes a guitar solo to the power-poppy "No Backbone" and The Band's Garth Hudson lends rootsy credibility to "Black Gown. But this is Dando's show, and he's more than ready for his close-up.
