Review of The Lemonheads

From Malaysia Star September 2006

Evan Dando’s Lemonheads shake off a decade-long hiatus with their vibrant self-titled debut for Vagrant, which, as previously reported, is due Sept 26. The 11-track disc is crammed with insistently melodic, peppy power pop, driven by the rhythm section of Descendents drummer Bill Stevenson and bassist Karl Alvarez.

Dinosaur Jr.’s J Mascis solos wildly on No Backbone and Steve’s Boy, a son’s belated attempt at reconciliation with his ill father. Elsewhere, the Band’s Garth Hudson contributes keyboards to the blistering opener Black Gown and Hammond B3 organ on the closer December.

Other highlights include the jaunty Poughkeepsie, first single Become the Enemy and Pittsburgh, which easily could have fit on 1993’s Come on Feel the Lemonheads. Dando, bassist Josh Lattanzi and drummer John Kent will hit the road in mid-November in support of the new album.
